Two neighbours can be quoted hundreds of dollars apart for good reasons – one has a 1990s switchboard with no spare capacity, the other had a rewire two years ago. Usable Capacity Is the Biggest Single Price Driver
Pricing tracks capacity more closely than any other factor, so this is where most of the gap between quotes comes from. The trap is that capacity is quoted two ways.
Nominal Capacity vs Usable Capacity
Nominal capacity is what the battery holds on paper. Usable capacity is what you can actually draw, after the reserve the manufacturer keeps back to protect cell life. Two batteries advertised at the same kWh can differ in usable storage, making a cheaper unit look better value than it is. Size to Evening Usage, Not Total Usage
A battery earns its keep covering the hours your panels are not producing – the evening peak and the overnight base load. Sizing to total daily consumption buys storage you will rarely cycle, and unused capacity is the most expensive thing on a quote.
A full year of bills and, better still, interval data from a solar monitoring system shows where your consumption actually falls, which usually means a smaller battery than the first instinct.
Single Phase or Three Phase Changes the Hardware
Three-phase homes need equipment that works across all three phases, and that hardware sits at a different price point to a single-phase setup. It is not an upsell, it is a different product class.
Backup complicates it further. Confirm which phases stay live before signing, because backing up one phase and backing up three are not the same job.
Switchboard, Meter and Wiring Upgrades
These line items most often turn a cheap quote into an expensive job halfway through the install. None are optional if the site needs them.
- Switchboard capacity – older boards often have no spare ways, an undersized main switch, or no RCD protection to current standards, and the battery cannot be connected until that is sorted.
- Meter changes – adding storage often means a meter reconfiguration through your retailer, costing time as well as money.
- Cable runs – a garage on the far side of the house costs more than a wall beside the meter box.
- Site conditions – asbestos-backed boards, tight access and two-storey cable runs add labour.

How Much of the House Do You Want Running in a Blackout?
Backup is the factor homeowners most often leave out of the brief and are most disappointed to find missing. A battery is not automatically a blackout solution – it needs a gateway and the circuits you care about wired to it.
- Essential-circuits backup (fridge, lights, a few power points) is the cheaper path and covers most outages sensibly.
- Whole-home backup needs more capable hardware and more wiring, and it costs accordingly.
- Running air conditioning or an induction cooktop through backup changes the hardware requirement again, because of surge demand.
Decide which circuits matter before you compare quotes. It is the easiest way to make two totals mean the same thing.
Hybrid Inverter or AC-Coupled Retrofit?
If you already have solar, how the battery joins the system changes the price. Both routes work; they suit different starting points.
A hybrid inverter replaces the solar inverter with one unit handling panels and battery together – tidier and generally more efficient, but you pay twice for an inverter. An AC-coupled retrofit leaves the existing inverter in place and adds battery-side conversion, which usually costs less up front and suits a young, healthy inverter.

Why Is the Cheapest Solar Battery Quote Usually the Most Expensive?
Because the cheapest quote is usually the least complete one. When a total looks unusually low, the difference is almost always something left out.
- Switchboard or meter upgrade excluded, to be quoted later
- No backup gateway, so the battery does nothing in an outage
- Usable capacity smaller than the headline kWh suggests

Incentives for home batteries have been revised more than once, and any dollar figure in an article ages badly. Check the current position with NSW Government rebates, grants and schemes and with the Clean Energy Regulator, and ask your installer to show any incentive as its own line so you can see the pre-incentive price.
Feed-in tariffs matter too. As export rates fall, storing your own generation is worth more than selling it – the real economic argument for a battery on a well-sized solar panel installation.
